Perpetrators of Ibi, Wukari violence will be punished – Ag. Gov Umar

The Acting Governor of Taraba State, Alhaji  Garba Umar has said that anybody found culpable in the recent ethno-religious violence in Ibi and Wukari Local Government Areas of the state would be brought to book.

Umar said this on Thursday when the delegation of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) led by its Secretary-General, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede paid him a courtesy visit in Jalingo.

It will be recalled that there have been recurrent attacks on Muslims by Christians in Ibi and Wukari since Nov. 2012.

Many lives have been lost while over 1000 houses belonging to Muslims and 37 mosques were said to have been burnt.

Receiving the delegation, the Governor, who has since set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry on the crises, said the culprits would be punished accordingly to serve as a deterrent to others who might be contemplating violence in the state.

Umar said justice would be done to all concerned in the crises, stressing that only culprits would be dealt with within the ambit of the law.

According to him, the crises in Wukari and  Ibi were of utmost concern to his government, since no meaningful development can be achieved in a chaotic atmosphere.

Earlier, Oloyede said the recurrent violence being perpetrated against Muslims in Ibi and Wukari Local Government Areas of the state by Christians was unacceptable to the NSCIA.

He said the deliberate attempt to force Muslims out of Wukari and some other parts of the state would fail.

The NSCIA Secretary-General urged the governor to take adequate measures to protect the lives and properties of Muslims in the state.

He commended the governor for setting up a judicial commission of inquiry on the crises, noting that justice must be done to victims by bringing the culprits to book.

The NSCIA demanded that Muslims who suffered losses in the unprovoked attacks should be adequately compensated by the government.

He urged the governor to ensure that everybody gets justice, noting that Islam demands that justice must be done to all, irrespective of religious differences.

Oloyede prayed for the quick recovery of the ailing Governor Danbaba Suntai and urged politicians to always uphold fairness and avoid selective justice.

“What is good for the goose is also good for the gander”, he said
